The Lady Priscilla Method

Gentle structure. Emotional intelligence. Practical trust.

A New Framework for Dog Rehabilitation and Growth

Not every dog needs structure alone. Some need story.

The Lady Priscilla Method is a trauma-informed, emotionally intelligent approach to raising, training, and rehabilitating dogs — especially those who’ve known fear, confusion, or uncertainty. It’s also a framework for service dog training, helping them build the emotional resilience they need to deal with an unpredictable human world. It honors the dog’s internal world and invites them to co-author a life of purpose and calm confidence.

Born from One Dog’s Transformation… And a Lifetime of Behavior Work

Lisa Fritscher, psychology-trained behavior writer, works with her Dutch Shepherd, Lady Priscilla, on a cognitive training game as part of The Lady Priscilla Method

I’m Lisa Fritscher — a psychology-trained writer, editor, and dog handler with more than 15 years of experience creating behavior-based educational content, and am now working on my master’s in animal science and behavior. I spent years as the Phobias Expert for About.com (now VeryWellMind), where my writing on fear, trauma, and recovery was cited in over 100 academic papers and 40+ books. I’ve also trained and mentored content teams, developed instructional design programs, and written extensively on anxiety, trust, and healing.

Then I met Lady Priscilla — a 48-pound Dutch Shepherd, fresh from the shelter and unsure of everything. What began as a journey toward basic safety quickly became something deeper: a co-created framework of rituals, logic, communication, and emotional understanding. That moment — when survival gave way to becoming — is captured in It’s Never Too Late to Have a Happy Puppyhood.

The Method is what emerged.

In Lady Priscilla’s case, part of her becoming was service dog training. But The Method works for all dogs, from puppies learning to explore the world to rescues that had a tough start in life.

How It Works

If you’d like to dig further into the Method, we’ve written about it in The Lady Priscilla Method Explained — a post that traces how fear gave way to curiosity, and how that spark became a framework for trust and growth.

Want to go even deeper into the scientific foundation?
We’ve adapted Maslow’s hierarchy into a five-level model of canine growth — one that honors safety, trust, expression, and purpose.

Explore the Maslow hierarchy for dogs… and see why this model isn’t just theory. It’s the framework that shapes how we understand healing, growth, and lasting change.

What Makes the Lady Priscilla Method Different?

It blends the best of:

  • Trauma-informed principles from human psychology
  • Behavioral shaping and cooperative care from modern dog training
  • Cognitive engagement and symbolic reasoning, recognizing dogs as emotionally rich, thinking beings
  • Story-driven routines that give dogs narrative clarity and internal structure
  • Relationship-first philosophy that builds mutual trust, not dominance

The Method won’t give you a “robo-dog”. It creates something far better: a thoughtful, emotionally aware partner who chooses connection—not compliance.

This isn’t about perfection or control.
It’s about partnership, choice, and the long game of emotional safety.
