There’s Something Missing in Dog Training
Most dog training methods stop at obedience.
But understanding dog behavior goes far beyond “sit” and “stay.”
Real behavior change — the kind that holds up in public, at home, or anywhere in between — starts with how your dog senses, processes, and interprets the world around them. And that’s where most training methods fall short.
The Lady Priscilla Method is the only known framework that combines Maslow’s hierarchy of needs with cognitive-behavioral principles to create something new:
A method that teaches dogs to think, not just obey — transforming obedience into understanding through canine cognition.
Why It Matters… for Every Dog Owner
Most training methods rely on reactive behaviorism — you show the dog what to do in one situation, reward them, and repeat… forever. Every new place, every new cue, every new distraction? Start from scratch.
But what if your dog could think? What if it could simply read the room and adapt its behaviors accordingly?
With The Lady Priscilla Method, you’re not just conditioning responses. You’re teaching your dog how to problem-solve, how to generalize, and how to apply patterns across real-world contexts.
A cue like “Tunnel” doesn’t just mean the plastic thing in class. It means any narrow space — even between museum guests.
“Store manners” aren’t limited to your local drugstore. They carry over to Target. To the airport. To theme parks.
Instead of memorizing tricks, your dog learns principles, patterns, and possibilities.
Why should you care?
Because when your dog understands how to learn, everything gets easier:
- Faster progress
- Fewer setbacks
- Deeper trust
- Real-world reliability
And for rescues and service dogs?
It’s more than just training.
It’s transformation.
And it’s a radically different approach to understanding dog behavior — one that starts inside, not outside.
The Maslow-CBT Pyramid: What It Is and Why It Works
Before we could teach Lady Priscilla to think, we had to understand what she needed.
That’s where we started — with Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, adapted for dogs.
This gave us a framework for the emotional journey: from physiological safety and secure attachment all the way to growth, confidence, and purpose.
It helped us see that obedience isn’t the first step after basic biological needs.
Emotional safety is.

But emotional readiness is only the beginning.
What most models miss — even the good ones — is that dogs are thinkers. They can notice patterns. Make decisions. Problem-solve. Even exhibit intelligent disobedience when the situation calls for it.
So we added something new.
We took the Maslow framework and layered in cognitive development and behavioral scaffolding to create a structured path to help dogs grow not just emotionally, but mentally and behaviorally as well.
The result?

This is the core of The Lady Priscilla Method — a real-world framework for understanding dog behavior at every level.
A method that doesn’t just work in class.
It works everywhere.
What Makes This Different from Other Training Methods
Here’s how most models compare:
- Dominance-based training: Outdated, fear-based, and counterproductive
- Pure behaviorism: Teaches what to do, but not why… and often breaks down in complex or new environments
- Maslow-only approaches: Nurture emotional well-being but often lack structure and progression
- Cognition-focused research: Fascinating but mostly confined to labs or elite training circles
The Lady Priscilla Method is the only known approach that brings it all together:
✅ Emotional safety (Maslow)
✅ Cognitive development (how dogs learn to think)
✅ Behavioral scaffolding (reliable, real-world fluency)
That’s what makes the Maslow-CBT Pyramid such a powerful tool for understanding dog behavior, not just managing it.
It’s not a quick-fix technique.
It’s a layered growth model that changes how you relate to your dog (and it’s rarely linear).

[Side note: If you’re more of a visual learner, we’ve also created a Cognition–Emotion–Behavior triangle — a simplified companion to this pyramid that shows how dogs’ thoughts, feelings, and actions support each other in real time.]
Real-Life Thinking: From Cheeseburgers to Green Lights
Here’s what it looks like in practice:
- Cheeseburger Routine: In the car, Lady Priscilla waits to eat her cheeseburger until both humans exit — a self-imposed routine that signals closure and safety. No cue needed. Just cognition.
- Green Light Watcher: She sits calmly watching red lights and rises just before the car moves on green… even before her humans notice.
- Tight-Space Navigation: At CVS, she analyzed a tricky aisle and chose the best path through a narrow gap between people and displays, like a choreographed dance.
- Creating Her Own Rituals: She invented an entire game to get ready for walks — and expects her humans to play along.
- Space Awareness & Nudge: When she needs to get past Grandpa, she gently nudges his foot out of the way. It’s not trained. It’s understood.
Each of these moments reflects a deeper level of understanding dog behavior, not just shaping it. They also show the type of communication that is possible when the dog and handler truly understand each other.

About the Method (and the Human Behind It)
I’m not a certified dog trainer. I’m a behavior nerd with a BA in clinical psychology, a background in phobia education, and a lifelong passion for understanding what drives behavior — both human and canine.
Before founding The Lady Priscilla Method, I spent years writing for Verywell Mind, specializing in fear and anxiety. That experience gave me a deep appreciation for the emotional side of learning — and what happens when fear gets in the way.
Now, I’m pursuing a Master’s in Animal Science and Behavior, with a focus on real-world training rooted in trust, cognition, and emotional safety.
The Maslow-CBT Pyramid is part of that journey — and so is this site.
What’s Next: For You and Your Dog
This is just the beginning.
Over time, we’ll share more about how each layer of the Maslow-CBT Pyramid plays out in real life — whether you’re working with a rescue, raising a service dog, or just trying to connect more deeply with your dog.
We’ll explore ideas like:
- What agency looks like in daily life
- How emotional readiness impacts learning
- Why generalization and problem-solving are more than just advanced skills
As the Method evolves, we’ll be releasing tools, frameworks, and real-world guides to help you apply it — in your home, in your community, and in your relationship with your dog.
You can start now by exploring the Lady Priscilla Method page or checking out our printable tools and guides in the Etsy shop.
And if you’re ready to go deeper, keep an eye out — the best is yet to come.
Because Obedience Isn’t the Goal — Understanding Is
We don’t want dogs who just follow orders.
We want dogs who understand the world around them —
And we want to get better at understanding dog behavior in return.
That’s why we teach dogs to think, not just obey.
